LyicsA youthful man once ask'd our Lord,
How he should life obtain;
My son, what doth the Lord record;
He said to him again.
"Love thy father and all mankind,
And God with all thine heart;
To the distress'd be always kind,
Of life you'll gain a part."
The youth repli'd "I've kept the law,
And all those things I've done"-
In his professions, Jesus saw
His pride was not yet gone.
Go and sell all thine earthly store,
And take thy daily cross;
Give all thy riches to the poor,
And take me for thy loss."
Alas! my Lord who'll bear thy word,
When this comes out so plain;
Cannot this world to me afford,
My treasures and my gain?
My Jesus says if you would have
Heav'n to be your gain,
All worldly treasures you must leave,
Eternal to obtain.
God you must love above your dross,
And condescend so low,
That all this world must be your loss;
To Jesus you must bow.
Then follow Christ in all his ways,
Your treasures lay above;
And then in strains of highest praise,
You'll dwell upon his love.
