Lyics

Come brethren all, who love the Lord,
I'll now begin his praises;
The theme, the sweetest song afford,
My heart and tongue it raises,
Jesus, my great high priest and king,
Now rules me with his sceptre;
To him I will my honor bring,
And make my guide the scripture.

Long did my feet traverse the road;
That led me down to danger;
But loud I hear'd the voice of God,
"Return to me, ye stranger,"
I then forsook my sin and pride,
With all my carnal pleasure,
With haste I came to Jesus' side
And found the heav'nly treasure,

Now I will raise my constant song,
To Christ my conq'ring Saviour;
My anthems now to him belong,
Who gave me all this favor,
Tho' I am here in desert lands,
And by my foes surrounded,
He will extend his blessed hands,
And beat them back confounded.

He feeds me on his richest grace,
And gives me living water;
He leads my through the darkest place,
And makes my journey sweeter;
He drives the thund'ring tempter off,
Which makes me still the bolder;
When this proud world doth at me scoff
My love is not the colder.

The prize of life I keep in view,
While here below I wander;
My Saviour's love and glory shew,
And feel my faith the stronger;
I'm now on wing and long to go,
And dwell with him forever;
There at his feet I'll humbly bow
And praise in ardent fervor.

A few more days I'll hear distress,
And hottest persecution;
From all, my God will give release,
And make me restitution;
He'll bring me home with him to dwell,
To sing eternal glory;
And far from all the snares of hell,
I'll tell my pleasing story.
