Lyics1 WHILE Eastern sages nightly gazed
On fields of light divinely fair,
The wondrous power of God they praised,
Who fix'd those orbs of glory there.
The spangled heavens shone all around;
Each star appear'd a sparkling gem,
When, bursting from the blue profound,
Arose, the star, of Bethlehem!
2 These holy men arose that night,
As guided by that star divine,
That, pouring floods of glorious light,
Did all the host of heav'n out-shine,
And, guided by its light on high,
O'er mountains, and thro' rugged glen,
Still flaming in the azure sky,
It led the way, to Bethlehem.
3 And when they saw the infant mild
For sinners born to bleed and die,
They worship'd there the holy child,
With bended heads and streaming eye;
Thy open'd now their treasures great,
Incense, and myrrh and gold and gem,
And pour'd them at Immanuel's feet,
The morning star, the star of Bethlehem!
