LyicsISRAEL the desert trod,
Sustain'd by pow'r divine,
While wond'rous mercy mark'd the road
With many a mystic sign.
When Moses gave the stroke,
From Horeb's flinty side
Issu'd a river, and the rock
The Hebrew's thirst suppli'd.
But O! what nobler themes
Does gospel grace afford;
From Calv'ry spring superior streams--
There hung the smitten Lord!
Of ev'ry hope bereft,
Sinners, to Jesus go;
Behold the Rock of Ages cleft,
And living currents flow.
Here may our spirits bathe,
Here may our joys abound,
Till, pass'd the wilderness and death,
We tread celestial ground!
